Ensuring cleaning of toilets and safe sanitation:
Best WASH practices, particularly handwashing with soap and clean water, should be strictly applied and maintained because these provide an important additional barrier to COVID-19 transmission and to the transmission of infectious diseases in general.
• People with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be provided their separate flush toilet. Flush toilets should operate properly and have functioning drain traps.
• The toilet should be flushed with lid down to avoid droplet spatter.
• If it is not possible to provide separate toilets, the toilet should be cleaned and disinfected at least once a day.
• Bathrooms should be cleaned and disinfected at least once a day. Regular household soap or detergent should be used for cleaning first and then, after rinsing, regular household disinfectant containing 0.5% sodium hypochlorite should be applied.
• Thoroughly wash hands after using the toilets.
• The person cleaning the toilet should not come in direct contact with human excreta. After cleaning the toilet, hands should be thoroughly washed with soap and water.
• Do not keep the toilet wet for a great period of time as it can lead to development of germs.
• Do not practice open defecation. If there is no option of toilet availability, do not defecate near a waterbody or in a place easily accessible to the public. Make sure to not come in contact with the excreta.
